Title chances Juventus seem lost after Derby d’Italia with Dutch leading roles

Juventus seems to drop out in the battle for the league title in the Serie A. The team of Massimiliano Allegri lost 0-1 to Internazionale on Sunday evening and is seven points behind the leader AC Milan, who also has a duel due. Inter are third, four points ahead of Juventus and three points behind Milan. The Derby d’Italia’s only goal came from a penalty kick earned by Denzel Dumfries.

Matthijs de Ligt (Juventus) and Denzel Dumfries (Inter) had a basic place, while Stefan de Vrij sat on the bench with the visitors. De Vrij was missing in the last two league games due to injuries and also missed the friendly international matches of Orange. It didn’t take long for the match to get going. In the seventh minute a downward header from Milan Skriniar created a threat; the alert Wojciech Szczesny kept the ball out of the short corner.

A curious moment arose on the other side when Samir Handanovic boxed the ball up after a cross from Juan Cuadrado. The ball descended into the five-meter area and Giorgio Chiellini then hit the crossbar. Álvaro Morata did not have his sights set on a header. After Skriniar’s header, the initiative lay entirely with Juventus, who fired eleven goals in the first half, against only one from Inter. Yet it was the visitors who, after a very chaotic end to the first half, went to the dressing rooms with a 0-1 lead.

Inter received a penalty for a foul by Morata on Dumfries. The attacker briefly stood on the foot of the steamed Dumfries; Referee Massimiliazno Irrati initially dismissed the incident, but was called to the side by his video assistant. After seeing the images, he still pointed to the dot. Çalhanoglu gave his effort too little direction, allowing Szczesny to make a save. Inter scored from the rebound, but the goal was disallowed.

A scrimmage ensued after Szczesny’s save; three Juventus defenders wanted to clear the ball and prevent Çalhanoglu from reaching the ball. It is possible that the arbitration saw a foul by Çalhanoglu on Danilo, just before Adrien Rabiot worked the ball into his own goal. The goal was disallowed, but then the penalty had to be taken again. During the delay, the video arbitration concluded that De Ligt was running into the penalty area too quickly. He was clearly already in the box before Çalhanoglu fired. The Dutchman thus deprived Szczesny of the heroic role, because the Inter midfielder did score in the second instance.

In the second half, Juventus also hoped for a penalty, but the arbitration ruled that a foul by Alessandro Bastoni on Denis Zakaria was committed just outside the penalty area. Shortly afterwards, Zakaria made an impression by dodging tackles from Marcelo Brozovic and Skriniar and hitting the post hard from outside the penalty area. Ten minutes before the end, De Ligt was easily trumped by Joaquín Correa on the sidelines, but Inter did not play well in the ensuing attack. As a result, Inter took the three points and Juventus seem to have lost their title chances.
