Latest update:

There is currently no size on Karim Benzema. Chelsea also found out in a painful way tonight. With a hat-trick in the eighth final against Paris Saint-Germain (3-1), Benzema shot his team to the last eight of the Champions League. Tonight he did the hat-trick trick thinly at Stamford Bridge. After 46 minutes, the Frenchman had three more goals to his name.

It was just after Hakim Ziyech came inside the lines immediately after the break. He should have helped Chelsea against the team he scored against on behalf of Ajax in 2019. But instead Édouard Mendy blundered immediately after the break by playing the ball far too short to Antonio Rüdiger. Benzema was there like the chickens and made it 1-3. The plans that Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel had made at half-time could therefore immediately be thrown back into the trash.

Before that 1-3, Benzema had already struck twice. In minutes 21 and 24, the Frenchman had put the ball behind Mendy with two flawless headers. Just before half time, after Kai Havertz had also made it 1-2 with a nice header, Benzema already had the chance to make his third. However, due to a light touché by Jorginho, the French striker shot just wide.

Immediately after the break, Benzema, who became the first Frenchman to score at least ten goals in a Champions League season, received his hat-trick from Mendy, who will be the next World Cup with Senegal against the Orange squad. With his fourth Champions League hat-trick, Benzema became the fourth player to have two consecutive multi-billion dollar hat-tricks after Luiz Adriano, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. He also became the first player ever to score a hat-trick against Chelsea in a European match.

It was three blows from Benzema that Chelsea couldn’t overcome in the remainder of the game. Romelu Lukaku was still brought to The Blues, but the Belgian stood out mainly by missing a huge chance to head the ball. Completely detached, he nodded the ball wide. Then César Azpilicueta also saw his attempt knocked out of the intersection by the invariably whistled Thibaut Courtois. He kept his goal clean and so Chelsea and Ziyech must make up for a 1-3 deficit next week (April 12) in Madrid.
