Course, weather and times Scheldeprijs 2022

Flat as a pancake: that is the best way to describe the Scheldeprijs. The competition starts at sea level in the Dutch port city of Terneuzen, while the highest point reached is no less than 22 meters above sea level. Although, that doesn’t say anything at all, because because we are close to the sea and it is going to be quite windy, it can sometimes be heavier than an average Alpine ride with at least 3000 altimeters.

After the start in Terneuzen, we immediately cross the Western Scheldt to Goes, and then set course towards the East. We finish after almost two hundred kilometers in Schoten, where several times a local lap has to be conquered. Don’t be mistaken though, because the first hundred kilometers can turn into a battlefield!

In terms of tension, the Scheldeprijs has to rely on the weather conditions. If it is dry and windless, we will sprint. But if it blows and rains, as seems to be the case next Wednesday, we will have an epic fan race.

For the time being, the wind will blow from the southwest with a force of four to five on the Beaufort scale, but there are also warnings for possible gusts. There is also a chance of rain in the Antwerp region throughout the day, so enjoy (for the TV viewers at least)!

Start: 12.45 pm
Finish: 5.15 pm

Note: changes can still be made.

Who can perform in harsh conditions? Normally the guys from Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl, who put their finisher here Fabio Jakobsen have with them. For the Dutchman, the Scheldeprijs is a big goal and the team will be happy to partly shake off the poor results of the past few weeks. Jakobsen himself already showed in Paris-Nice that he can handle these weather conditions very well.

This year’s fast Alpecin-Fenix men, Tim Merlier and Jasper Philipsen, are also at the start. In the Belgian team they are both played out as leaders, just like in Gent-Wevelgem. Also Dylan Groenewegenwho finished just behind Merlier in the Oxyclean Classic Brugge-De Panne, is back as spearhead of BikeExchange-Jayco.

Lotto Soudal has not (yet) put Caleb Ewan forward for this Scheldeprijs, so it is the young Arnaud De Lie who will be watched. De Lie impressed in similar weather conditions with a win in the Volta Limburg Classic and has shown on several occasions that he is incredibly fast. The other Belgian team, Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert, has Alexander Kristoff also a well-known specialist in-house.

BORA-hansgrohe is aiming for Sam Bennett, who hasn’t shown much this year. We will also post Nacer Bouhanni (Arkéa Samsic), Cees Bol (Team DSM), Matteo Moschetti (Trek-Segafredo) and Niccolo Bonifazio (TotalEnergies) among the outsiders, while hard drivers like Maciej Bodnar (TotalEnergies), Jannik Steimle (Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl) or Nils Politt (BORA-hansgrohe) might surprise after a hard course.
