FK Bodö/Glimt has again provided a resounding surprise by knocking AS Roma over the knee. After the Norwegians were already 6-1 too strong for the team of José Mourinho in the group stage at home, it became 2-1 in the first game of the quarterfinals on Thursday evening. In the duel between Olympique Marseille and PAOK, all the attention went to Dimitri Payet. The midfielder shot insanely from twenty meters and got everyone on the benches. The game in Stade Vélodrome ended in a 2-1 victory for the Southern French. The returns are next week.

Olympique Marseille – PAOK 2-1
The duel between Marseille and PAOK was already under high tension before the first whistle. Fans of the French club stormed a hotel where PAOK employees were in the run-up to the game. Fans also pelted each other with fireworks in the stadium prior to the game. The relations on the field were soon in favor of Marseille, who took the lead after just under fifteen minutes of play via Gerson. The midfielder was served by Payet with a splitting pass and shot from the edge of the penalty area.

It turned out to be just a foretaste of Payet’s truly fantastic goal. The midfielder received a corner from Cengiz Ünder on the stroke of half-time and suddenly took it on the slipper of more than twenty meters. The shot went in the right corner: 2-0. Early in the second half, the visitors did something back via Omar El Kaddouri. The midfielder was served by Andrija Zivkovic and made an excellent hit in the left corner. Marseille dominated almost the entire second half and owed it to itself that the game was not decided earlier. William Saliba had the best opportunity, but he found goalkeeper Alexandros Paschalakis in his way. Gerson was sent off with two yellow cards in injury time.

FC Bodö/Glimt – AS Roma 2-1
As usual, Rick Karsdorp could count on the confidence of trainer José Mourinho. At Bodö/Glimt, goalkeeper Joshua Smits had to settle for a reserve role behind Nikita Haikin. Roma hardly got to play football against the Norwegians, who scored no fewer than thirteen goals in the first company. However, the team of trainer Kjetil Knutsen lacked sharpness in the completion. Completely against the odds, Roma took the lead just before half-time via Lorenzo Pellegrini, who scored on Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s pass: 0-1. After the resumption, Bodö/Glimt managed to turn the tide. Ten minutes after the break, Ulrik Saltnes fortunately equalized, after which Hugo Vetlesen made the decision. On a pass from Amahl Pellegrino, the midfielder nodded the 2-1 in the 89th minute. Referee Serdar Gözübüyük was in charge of the match.
