Route stage 5 Tour of the Basque Country 2022

The fifth stage in the Basque Country is – as it has been all week – climbing from start to finish. In total there are five categorized climbs waiting, but on paper we count more than ten bumps. Good, because that will probably make the course hard immediately. Early escapees in the leading group will dream of daily success, while the pack in the standings is still so close together that several teams will be interested in a tough race.

Additional fodder for an explosive opening phase is the ascent of the Paresi in the first thirty kilometers. This climb is 9 kilometers long and rises at an average rate of 3.4 percent. Not a heavy giant, but enough to make war. After the top we follow a hilly phase, until we start at the Bedarona after more than 60 kilometers. At 7.1 percent, this is a bit more difficult, but also ‘only’ 2.1 kilometers long. We don’t expect fireworks here in the peloton at a hundred kilometers from the finish, although you never know in 2022…

It is more likely that there will be racing in the four-stage rocket that will usher in the final. The Contzagaraigana (2.6 kilometers at 6.5 percent) and Trabakua (3.3 kilometers at 7.1 percent) are categorized but will be followed by two more climbs, with the first of the two rounding the top in final finish mallabia. After a quick descent, the peloton and any escapees have about twenty kilometers to catch their breath. This is followed by an irregular rocky thing with the Karabieta, which is steep especially in the first kilometers. 6.7 kilometers at 5.6 percent is more than enough to really open the final, especially on the steeper sections.

After this climb it is time to descend and we race towards the final climb. We can safely call this a runner, which is why it is not categorized either. In the last 600 meters, however, it rises on average at 10.5 percent. In these streets there can be one more sprint for the stage victory, and for every precious second for the general classification.

Start: 13.24 hrs
Finish: Around 5.30 pm

Weather stage 5 Tour of the Basque Country 2022

Cloudy and south-westerly wind 2 or 3 when we start on Friday from Zamudio. The sun barely beats the clouds in this stage, but no rain is forecast. Moreover, with a temperature between 16 and 19 degrees, it will be very pleasant racing weather. Towards the final, the wind will pick up in some places for a while and we occasionally notice wind force 4 from the west. That will be roughly in the back or diagonally in the back, which makes attacking interesting.

If we look at the course of the last three days, it is likely that the big teams are working to provide their leader with a good starting position for a stage win. With a thinned out group we drove to the finish for the past three days and there was Julian Alaphilippe once the best. The other two times the Frenchman was narrowly beaten in the sprint, so we can certainly expect him at the front in the fifth stage. However, the course and arrival of this ride is a lot more difficult, so perhaps that teammate Remco Evenepoel can do more here on behalf of Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl.

However, the 22-year-old Belgian said after the fourth stage that his focus is mainly on Saturday and that he is trying to survive on Friday. According to Evenepoel, Primoz Roglici very strong, although he still showed some hiccups in the third stage on Wednesday. On Thursday Roglic was in good shape again and the Slovenian finished fourth in the sprint. On Friday, a more difficult finish will be finished and Roglic usually appears to be one of the best in the world. teammate Jonas Vingegaard showed earlier in the Tour of the Basque Country to be one of the strongest riders uphill and may also be played as an asset by Jumbo-Visma.

The Dane of Jumbo-Visma countered several attacks from . on Wednesday Adam Yates, who undoubtedly want to cause the necessary damage with INEOS Grenadiers. With Thursday’s stage winner, Daniel Felipe Martinez, they still have a strong rider up their sleeve. In addition, they also have Geraint Thomas, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Carlos Rodríguez, Ben Tulett and Omar Fraile who can also climb quite a bit on a good day.

Other riders who are currently in the top ten of the standings and who hold their own uphill are Aleksandr VlasovDavid Gaudu and Enric Mas† They were right in front on Wednesday when it went up, while Pello Bilbao won that ride with a thinned out group of fifteen men. Who were also good from the front were Steff Cras, Ion Izagirre, Marc Soler and Rigoberto Urán.
