with videoTim van Rijthoven has secured a place in the semi-finals at the grass tennis tournament in Rosmalen. The number 205 in the world was too strong for Frenchman Hugo Gaston with 7-6 (2) 6-4.
The 25-year-old Van Rijthoven thus gave his surprising victory on Thursday over the American Taylor Fritz a suitable follow-up. The number 4 in the Netherlands had never won a match at the highest level before this edition of the tournament in Brabant.
Van Rijthoven finished it off on his first match point with a forehand down the line. The strongly serving Dutchman won no less than 38 of the 40 points played on his first serve. He did not give up a service game and hit twelve aces. One break, halfway through the second set, was enough for him to win the match after convincingly winning the tiebreak of the first set.
The match of the only remaining Dutchman in singles was played on Court 1, because on Friday the combined men’s and women’s tournament Daniil Medvedev and Félix Auger-Aliassime – the numbers 1 and 2 of the men’s tournament – will play on the center court.
On Saturday, Van Rijthoven will face Félix Auger-Aliassime in the last four. The Canadian second placed in the last eight defeated Russian Karen Chatsjanov with 7-6 (5) 6-4. Auger-Aliassime, the number 9 in the world, reversed a 5-3 deficit in the first set. He then won the tiebreak with difficulty and only one break in the second set was enough for the victory.
Auger-Aliassime (21), winner of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam at the beginning of this year, can become the first tennis player since 1997 to take the title in both Ahoy and Rosmalen. 25 years ago Richard Krajicek succeeded.
Van Rijthoven, the surprise of the tournament, can prevent that special performance. ,,We know each other from our junior days. He is a tough opponent, a boy with strong groundstrokes and a good forehand. I hope to be here on Sunday”, said the Canadian about the number 4 in the Netherlands.
Medvedev with a lot of effort to the semi-finals
Daniil Medvedev has made it to the last four at the Rosmalen grass tournament with some effort. The number two in the world managed to avoid a stunt by Ilya Ivashka from Belarus with 7-6 (8), 6-4.
In the first set, in which both lost their service game twice, Medvedev used his third set point at 9-8 in the tiebreak. In the second set he broke the world number 48 at 5-4 on love. On the first game point, Ivashka struck out a backhand.
Medvedev hopes to take his first title since last year’s US Open in Rosmalen. The Russian was a finalist at the Australian Open at the beginning of this year and had a less clay-court season due to minor back surgery.
On Saturday, Medvedev will face Adrian Mannarino from France in the semi-final, who won the last edition in 2019. The title holder, the global number 70, fought his way past American Brandon Nakashima in three sets.
Schuurs must stop fighting
Demi Schuurs has given up in the semi-final of the women’s doubles at the grass tennis tournament in Rosmalen. The world number 15 in doubles has suffered a back injury.
The 28-year-old Schuurs and her partner Desirae Krawczyk from the United States trailed 4-1 against Tamara Zidansek from Slovenia and the Australian Ellen Perez.
Schuurs won the doubles tournament in Rosmalen in 2018, together with the Belgian Elise Mertens.
Bencic can’t make a fist
Olympic tennis champion Belinda Bencic has been eliminated in the quarterfinals of the grass tournament in Rosmalen. The number 2 of the seeding list lost 6-4 6-2 to Veronika Koedermetova from Russia.
The sixth-seeded Koedermetova (25), who participates under a neutral flag at the Autotron, never gave up her service game against Bencic. The global number 24 had the victory after an hour and 27 minutes. Bencic, the number 17 in the world, took gold at the Tokyo Olympics last year. The Swiss made it to the final in Rosmalen in 2015. She then lost to the Italian Camila Giorgi.
Russian loses on Valencia clay
For tennis star Arantxa Rus, the Valencia clay tournament in singles is over. The 31-year-old Dutch had to lose in the quarterfinals of the WTA 125 tournament against the Swedish Mirjam Björklund: 6-3, 6-7 (4), 2-6.
Björklund (23) is number 134 in the world, Russian is in 77th place. The Westland player preferred the tournament in Spain on her favorite clay over this week’s grass tournament in Rosmalen. ,,Because there are no points to be earned at Wimbledon, I prefer to continue my clay-court season a little longer,” said Rus last month after her elimination in the first round of Roland Garros. She reached the quarterfinals in Valencia without losing a set, but after winning the first set, things went wrong against Björklund.
Rus did reach the final of the doubles. With the Russian Alexandra Panova, she defeated Anastasia Detiuc and Miriam Kolodziejova from the Czech Republic in the semifinals: 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.
