On the day of the very tough final stage in the Critérium du Dauphiné, the Tour of Switzerland will start in Küsnacht, the next WorldTour stage race of eight days. In the leader’s jersey looked closely at the first ride.
Route stage 1 Tour of Switzerland 2022
The first stage of the Tour of Switzerland will be held in its entirety on a local circuit around the start and finish place Küsnacht. This course is completed four times from the start and contains two tricky climbs: the Pfannenstiel (4.1 km at 4.6 percent) and four times the Küsnachter Berg (2.8 km at 7.3 percent).
The finish is only five kilometers from the top of that last climb, the percentages of which are a bit distorted. The devil is in the tail of the Küsnachter Berg, which averages about 10 to 11 percent in the last kilometer. Remarkable: the climb has almost no bends.
The steep sections of the Küsnachter Berg.
We hardly descend in the five kilometers after that last top. It runs dirty until one kilometer from the finish, after which it flattens under the rag until the finish. So the most likely scenario is a strong puncher who wins from an attack on the last climb or a sprint with a small group and thus gets to put on the first leader’s jersey.
Start: 12.50 pm
Finish: 5.20 pm

We give the punchers the slight benefit of the doubt for this stage, as it could very well be a World Cup round in Küsnacht. Marc Hirschic may well be the number one contender. The Swiss showed his form in Friday’s GP Canton Aargau, which ended with a win. Hirschi said after that race that he gets motivation to race in his own country and that can also be an advantage on Sunday.
However, he is certainly not the only puncher at the start. guys like Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroen Team), Maximilian Schachmann (BORA-hansgrohe), Michael Matthews (BikeExchange-Jayco), Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers) and Alex Aranburu (Movistar); they are all there and will each hope for a good performance.
And then there are the classification riders, who can make their first move here in this very tough Tour of Switzerland. See the bookmakers Remco Evenepoel even as the top favorite for this ride, but that is going a bit too far for us. BORA-hansgrohe has with Aleksandr Vlasov and Sergio Higuita two strong and fast irons in the fire. Other options are Jakob Fuglsang (Israel-Premier Tech), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan Team) and iron eater Daniel Felipe Martinez (INEOS Grenadiers).
However, pace has to be made on the climbs, otherwise the drivers run the risk that smart figures will take the victory in the final kilometers. Patrick Bevin (Israel-Premier Tech) we put in that category, as well as Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies) and Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost). Marc Soler (UAE-Team Emirates) also likes those chaotic finals.
