Groenewegen rushes to stage victory in third stage Tour, Van Aert again second

Dylan Groenewegen has won the third stage of the Tour de France in a spectacular final. The Dutchman was faster on the finish line than Wout van Aert and Jasper Philipsen. Jakobsen was stuck in fifth place this time.

It was the third and last stage on Danish soil of the Tour de France this year. Like the previous days, fans from the Scandinavian country had again flocked to the track to cheer on the riders. They did so with full gusto, especially when the lone frontrunner Magnus Cort Nielsen passed by. The polka dot jersey wearer had attacked in the opening kilometer of the ride to Sønderborg, but hadn’t seen anyone with him.

Cort strengthens mountain jersey, Van Aert scores at intermediate sprint

Cort went on a long journey alone. In the meantime, he picked up all the points for the mountain jersey, considerably strengthening his lead in the mountains classification. The peloton took it very easy in the meantime. After the EF Education-EasyPost rider had received his loot, the driver was recaptured 53 kilometers from the finish.

The only other point of excitement on the road to Sønderborg was the intermediate sprint. This took place before Cort was caught, so the maximum score was gone. Behind him, however, there were still plenty of points to pick up. Van Aert was the first to cross the line in the peloton, strengthening his lead in the points classification. Jakobsen put in more effort for the points than the day before and crossed the line after the Belgian.

Another crash in the final, mass sprint imminent

Due to the calm pace, many riders were still fit in the final phase of the race. This ensured a high tempo in the run-up to the final. For a long time it seemed to go very well, but in the last ten kilometers it unfortunately went wrong again due to a narrowing of the road. Reasonably at the front of the peloton, there was a big crash.

Most of the sprinter teams and classification riders came through the incident unscathed. On a technical part of the course – with some difficult cobblestones on it – Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl took the lead in the peloton. Jakobsen was kept well up front in this way. INEOS Grenadiers and Jumbo-Visma also remained well on their way.

Sprinters battle for victory

It resulted in a very fast final, in which the different trains overran each other every once in a while. Trek-Segafredo and Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert, among others, appeared at the front in the run-up to the last kilometer, but in the chaos it was difficult to stay at the front. Everyone was trying to get through the last corner first.

Van Aert seemed to be in an excellent position to take the win this time, but again fell short at the finish. This time it was Groenewegen who rushed past him at the last minute. Jakobsen started the sprint too far and was no longer involved. Third place in the result was reserved for Jasper Philipsen.
