with videoAfter an impressive comeback against Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic has kept his dream of a 21st Grand Slam title alive. The only 20-year-old Italian led 2-0 in sets in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, but was unable to complete his stunt against the number one on the seeding list. Djokovic recovered, won three sets in a row and reached the semi-finals for the 11th time in London: 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
The first-seeded Djokovic, the global number 3, finished it after 3 hours and 35 minutes with a love game. After the loss of the first two sets, the Serb raised his level and gave the talented Italian hardly any chances.
I was lucky to get off to a good start in the third set. That was the turnaround
At the end of the fourth set Sinner broke his ankle, but he was able to complete the match. In the final phase, however, Djokovic showed his best tennis. In the deciding set he broke the Italian twice and gave his opponent only thirteen points. In addition, the favorite, in possession of twenty grand slam titles, did not lose a point on his first serve in the fifth set.
The 35-year-old Djokovic thus avoided his first defeat at Wimbledon since 2017. Five years ago he gave up in the quarterfinals against the Czech Tomas Berdych. Since that defeat, the Serb has won the title three times in London. The tournament was canceled in 2020 due to the outbreak of the corona virus.
Djokovic, in the previous round in four sets too strong for Tim van Rijthoven, is aiming at Wimbledon for his first grand slam title in a year. Last year he lost the final at the US Open, at the beginning of this year he was not allowed to participate in the Australian Open due to the vaccination obligation and at Roland Garros he lost in the last eight to Rafael Nadal.
,,We played two different games today”, said Djokovic. ,,In the first it didn’t go well for me and Jannik was the dominant player. After two lost sets I picked myself up. Sometimes that helps. I was lucky to get off to a good start in the third set. That was the turning point. It gave me confidence and I sensed some doubt in him.”
Djokovic will face British Cameron Norrie in the next round. He is in the semifinals of a grand slam tournament for the first time in his career. Home player Norrie (26) defeated Belgian David Goffin in five sets in an exciting game that lasted 3.5 hours: 3-6 7-5 2-6 6-3 7-5. Goffin had already been on the track for 4.5 hours against American Frances Tiafoe two days earlier.
Norrie is the first Briton since Andy Murray in 2016 to reach the semi-finals of Wimbledon. ,,I now have to think back to all the hard work and all the sacrifices I had to make. It certainly paid off,” said Norrie, who is looking forward to meeting Djokovic. “I think I’m in shock when I win a game like this.”
