World Cup surprise Chile goes against the Orange for the next round: ‘Just the beginning’

NOS Sports

At the World Hockey Championship in Amstelveen, Chile turns out to be the biggest surprise. On Tuesday it narrowly defeated Ireland 1-0, finalist of the previous edition. On Wednesday evening, the hockey dwarf will compete against the reigning champion: the Netherlands.

With the victory over the Irish, debutant Chile even has a chance to advance one round. If they win against the Netherlands, they will finish in the first two, but the stunt team also has a chance of the next round if they lose. Then Ireland may not beat Germany in the other group match.

Even though the South American country is the lowest-placed participant, they showed in their last competition that they were not competing for bacon and beans. After a 4-1 defeat against Germany, there was the victory against Ireland.

We don’t come to compete, we come to compete.

Sergio Vigil, Chile national coach

Keepster Natalia Salvador hopes her team has a chance to win more: “We will work very hard as a team and then we’ll see where we end up. Our greatest strength is that we are a super close team and give each other everything. Everyone is motivated to give everything to make it to the World Cup.”

The Chilean national team coach, the experienced Argentinian Sergio Vigil, told his players before the tournament: “We don’t come to participate, we come to compete.” Unlike his team, Vigil is not a debutant at the World Cup. On the contrary: with the Argentina women’s team, he won gold at the 2002 World Cup and silver at the 2000 Olympics, among other things.

According to Salvador, since his arrival, the coach has ensured that the team dares to dream of playing at a World Cup and Olympic Games. “He is a very passionate coach who demands that we always work hard and get better. He brings out the best in our team, without him we wouldn’t be here today.”

‘Watch out’

Salvador explains why her country is and America is not at the World Cup: “We were allowed to organize the Pan American Cup. Playing at home motivated us even more. I think everything fell into place just right this year.” The American women were eliminated after shoot-outs and that is why Chile is now in the Netherlands and the US.

Salvador enjoys the atmosphere at the World Cup with her team. She has already experienced the hockey atmosphere here when she played the Euro Hockey League with her Spanish club Junior in April at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen and won bronze. Salvador: “The EHL was an amazing experience. It is a great stadium with great fans. For most of our team it is the first time they play in the Wagener Stadium. Everyone is amazed.”

The Netherlands is already through to the next round at the World Cup. Chile can progress in several ways. If they win, they’re through anyway. In defeat, they are dependent on the outcome of the Irish. If they do not beat Germany, Chile will be third and they will be allowed to play a cross-over match against the number three of group B.

The match between Chile and the Netherlands starts tonight at 7.30 pm, a summary can be seen afterwards on and in the NOS app.
