Atlético Madrid have started the new LaLiga season with a convincing win. Visiting Getafe, Diego Simeone’s team won 0-3. The first two goals were scored by Álvaro Morata, after which substitute Antoine Griezmann put the final score on the board. All assists came from João Félix.
The biggest purchase of Atlético Madrid last summer was Nahuel Molina, who came over from Udinese for twenty million euros. The Argentinian right-back immediately started in the starting lineup against Getafe. Newcomer Axel Witsel was also allowed to start the game; the Belgian who came over from Borussia Dortmund was at the heart of the defence Atletia. In addition, Simeone had made a spot in his starting eleven for the returning Morata and Saúl Ñíguez, who had been loaned to Juventus and Chelsea respectively. At home team Getafe, Enes Ünal, former player of NAC Breda and FC Twente, among others, started in the vanguard.
Atlético started the game dominantly and took the lead after fifteen minutes via Morata. The Spaniard got the ball on the edge of the penalty area from Félix and then managed to pass goalkeeper David Soria with a low distance shot. The goal seemed to shake Getafe awake, because suddenly that team also started to become dangerous and get opportunities. Via Borja Mayoral, the number fifteen of last LaLiga season was closest to a goal, but the Getafe striker slammed the ball into the crossbar just before half-time.
After an hour of play, Atlético doubled their lead, and again Morata and Félix were responsible for the goal. Getafe handed in the ball in his own half to Félix, who sent Morata deep. The striker was able to approach Soria’s goal and hit hard: 0-2. Getafe was unable to recover from that blow and fifteen minutes before the end, substitute Griezmann also made the 0-3 with a low slide from distance. Again the assist was from Félix. With this big win, Atlético now leads LaLiga together with Villarreal on the basis of goal difference. Next Sunday, those two teams will face each other in the second round, while Getafe will visit Girona a day later.
