Wijnaldum arrived around 6 p.m. along with his two-year younger brother Giliano (retired as a professional football player in 2019) at Ciampino airport, just south of Rome, where hundreds of AS Roma fans were already waiting. His flight to Rome was followed by more than 12,000 people at one point. Wijnaldum will not be officially presented until tomorrow morning by AS Roma, which already got thousands of enthusiastic fans on their feet for the presentation of Paulo Dybala last Tuesday.
AS Roma and Paris Saint-Germain already reached an agreement last week, when both clubs stayed in Israel. According to Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, AS Roma will hire the experienced midfielder this season for 5 million euros from Paris Saint-Germain, which will continue to pay half of Wijnaldum’s salary. Next year, AS Roma can definitively take over Wijnaldum for an amount of 8 million euros. AS Roma finished disappointingly sixth in Serie A last season, but as the winner of the Conference League, they will go straight into the group stage of the Europa League.
Wijnaldum made a free transfer from Liverpool to Paris Saint-Germain last year. There he signed a lucrative three-year contract with a gross monthly salary of 916,000 euros, but his period in Paris was not a success. PSG became champions in Ligue 1 again last season after a summer full of big acquisitions and Wijnaldum still came to 38 games in all competitions (average 52 minutes per appearance), but there was a lot of chagrin in Paris. Wijnaldum could never really convince and did not play in the eighth finals against Real Madrid.
Wijnaldum then also did not have to report to the Orange for four games in the Nations League at the beginning of June, after national coach Louis van Gaal criticized the 86-time international and former vice-captain of Orange. After a holiday of a month and a half, Wijnaldum thought he would report back to Paris Saint-Germain on Monday 4 July for the preparation for the new season, but he did not appear in the plans of new coach Christophe Galtier. The Dutchman was not allowed to go to Japan for the training camp that the club organized there and recently kept his condition up with a number of fellow sufferers, players who have also been declared redundant in Paris.
After having to keep himself fit last month, a solution has finally been found for Wijnaldum, who is the third big name at AS Roma after Paulo Dybala (Juventus) and Nemanja Matic (Manchester United) to enter Jose’s team on a free transfer. Mourinho. Rick Karsdorp is a fixture on the right wing of Mourinho’s team, while Justin Kluivert has been loaned out to RB Leipzig and OGC Nice for the past two seasons respectively. According to Italian media, the former Ajax player is now nominated to leave Rome permanently, where his contract expires in one year.
After Maarten Stekelenburg (2011-2013), Kevin Strootman (2013-2018), Urby Emanuelson (2014-2015), Rick Karsdorp (2017-present) and Justin Kluivert (2018-present), Wijnaldum is the sixth Dutchman at AS Roma, that became Serie A champions in 1942, 1983 and 2001.
